While perusing the regular research and development sites that I like to browse, I came across this wee bit O’news. While I’ve always had an interest in history (one of my degrees is in Archeology), and its impact on the modern world, the history of our favorite libation is far more murky and disparate than you’d think. Even our genes have shown that we human primates have a long and prosperous history with alcohol, fermentation, and intoxication. What is most enlightening of all this research is that moderation seems to be the norm, while binging and abstinence appear to be on the fringes of all the population studies that have been done. As an example, researchers have discovered that there really wasn’t any alcohol related diseases until we humans decided to settle down, and make our own beverages from our own crops that we grew ourselves. All this history aside, we still practice the ancient ways of going to the temple (aka pub), taking our benediction (sharing a pint with friends), and making merry with our peers. This makes me want to go to the local pub and have a beer or two with my comrades in fermentation!
